Plant Health
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) serves as Canada’s national plant protection organization, responsible for preventing the introduction and spread of plant pests and diseases. Activities include inspections, import controls, monitoring, and the issuance of phytosanitary certificates.
CPMA works with the CFIA, the Plant Health Directorate, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to promote and protect the healthy production of fruits and vegetables in Canada and around the world.

Pesticide Management
Pesticides can be used in both conventional and organic production. Before any pesticide can be used in Canada, it must undergo a rigorous regulatory evaluation by Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) under the Pest Control Products Act.
The PMRA ensures that products meet strict standards for human and environmental safety and comply with established Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs). The CFIA’s residue monitoring program provides further assurance that pesticide levels in fresh produce remain well within safe limits.
In the CFIA’s most recent National Chemical Residue Monitoring Program Report, the compliance rate for pesticides was 98.1% for domestic produce and 95.1% for imported produce.
